Can you believe that 2021 is coming to an end already? It feels like yesterday that we were entering 2021 and hoping for a better year than 2020. Now, we’re in the same position again, but hoping 2022 will be better than 2021.
If you’re anything like me, you get excited about the idea of a fresh new day planner for the new year. There’s something exciting about the start of a new planner; it’s almost like a fresh start. As an eco-conscious individual, I try my best to find eco-friendly alternatives to everyday items, and this includes my daily planner.
There are so many options available for a day planner, but not all of them are eco-friendly or made with the eco-conscious person in mind. Sure, it might be fun to pick a super bright and colourful planner or one with accessories and inserts. However, these often come at a cost to our environment. Using a digital planner would be the best option for someone who wants a completely zero waste planner, but I understand this doesn’t work for everyone. I’ve compiled some of the highest rated eco-friendly planner options to help you start your new year on the right track.
The Daily Page
The Daily Page planner is a woman-owned family run, small batch paper product that is gender neutral. It has full-page spreads for each day, with plenty of space to organize all aspects of both work and wellness.
The Daily Page planners are offered in increments of three or six months. The three month planners offer a journal built into the planner. If you like to keep everything together, this might be a good option for you. The six month planners can be purchased as a minimalist version, or the regular. The minimalist doesn’t have the extra planning pages that the regular planner has.
Each page has space for…
- Identifying your top three goals or easy wins for the day
- Creating a to-do list
- A schedule of events or appointments
- Hydration tracking
- Remembering medications, meetings or appointments
- Recording self-care and movement
- Prioritizing relationships and community
- Organizing and taking notes
Each six month planner features 204 pages (enough to cover a 6-month period). They are created 8.5×11 (standard paper size) to ensure you have lots of room for writing. The full calendar spreads are located in the front of the book instead of throughout the planner like you typically see.
The Daily Page is committed to reforestation efforts. For each planner purchased, a tree will be planted in your honour. The planners are also produced in Europe, where paper products are created using more than 60% renewable energy. The Daily Page planners are printed on recycled paper. All of their products ship using packing materials that are recycled, and the planner itself has been made 100% recyclable by avoiding any coatings on the paper or kraft cover.

It was only this year that I discovered Karst planners, and I am very intrigued. The pages in the Karst planner are made out of stone instead of trees. Stone paper is waterproof and tear resistant, so if by accident your planner gets wet, it won’t be damaged. Each month in the Karst planner features goal-setting guides to help you start each month off on the right track. They also have notebooks and bullet journals if you prefer alternate ways of planning.

The green dreamer planner has a hardcover that is made with un-dyed cot linen. It is a wonderful choice if you’re looking for a sturdy planner, but also one that will lay completely flat. Its pages are made with 100% recycled paper with soy based ink.
The weekly spreads in the Green Dreamer are not dated. This is good for people who tend to miss a day (or week). This leads to less waste, as you can just continue to fill in the dates when you’re ready to start planning again.
A neat feature of the Green Dreamer planner is that it includes dates that are either environmental or culturally related.
The Green Dreamer is also committed to reforestation efforts. With every planner purchased, one tree is planted!
If digital planning is more up your alley, they offer a digital download version – perfect for the zero-waster!

At A Glance
Growing up, I saw At A Glance planners everywhere; staples, Walmart, and just about any major retailer. What I didn’t know was that they were actually eco-friendly.
At A Glance planners are made with recycled materials – including the metal coil! The paper is recycled, and the cover is 50% post-consumer recycled.
This is a good option for you if you’re looking for an affordable option that can be conveniently found at many major retailers.

Letter C Design
Although it can be fun and exciting to start the new year with a brand new planner, that’s not always the case. Sometimes, you might have a previous planner that you’re still working through. Letter C Design planners are designed to begin at any month – this is something you specify upon ordering.
Letter C Design planners are made with recycled kraft paper, so you can feel good about using recycled materials that can be recycled again at the end of its life.

I know this post is about paper planners, but I thought I would include my favourite digital planner just in case you’re trying to decide whether paper or digital planning is right for you.
Cozi is an app that you can download on your phone or tablet. Unlike typical digital planners where you would have to use a secondary app (such as good notes) to open the digital planner file, the planner is fully contained within the app.
Cozi is more than just a planner – it’s a full family planning app that you can sync with all the members of your family. This is great if you have a busy family who has many different activities. Or, if you’re like me, just one person who like the simplicity of having one app that does everything.
In the calendar section of Cozi, there is a full month calendar option and a daily agenda. Along with this, there is a list section where you can include your to-do list, as well as other lists such as grocery lists or a list of chores. The app also gives you the option to store birthdays and recipes.
